You can only use epoxy pool paint over old epoxy paint and rubber pool paint over old rubber paint. You can use acrylic pool paint over any type of pool paint that isn t flaking off. If you do experience rain or wind blown debris before or soon after painting get out there with a leaf blower and clean shoes and clean out the pool of debris and rain water as soon as possible. Acrylic is made to paint directly over unpainted concrete plaster or concrete.

You can use gel coat if your pool steps currently have gel coat or bare fiberglass. With a shorter drying time cure rate water based acrylic allows you to fill your pool sooner. It will also work if you painted with acrylic before you can apply it right over the last paint job. It can and should be applied to a damp surface and will work on almost any painted surface.

If you notice that your pool steps are looking tacky it might be time for you to repaint them. Before and after painting the pool needs to be very dry unless you are using acrylic pool paint or epoxy primer.
